Civil War
American Civil War or The War Between the States, was a tragic four-year conflict that began April 12, 1861 and dragged on agonizingly until April 9, 1865.
Eleven states seceded from the Union after Abraham Lincoln’s election to form the Confederate States of America. Four long years of battles and general destruction accompanied both armies. The most well-known example of such destruction is Sherman’s March to the Sea.
It is estimated that more than 600,000 died during the Civil War, mostly by disease and wounds. It is still a debated conflict that holds our attention to this day.
Our collections from this war include weapons, uniforms, photographs, flags and much more.
